Beautiful country still unspoiled. Ideal for a 2 week self driving trip. You will find every you expect of Africa and much more (wild animals, beautiful and diverse scenery, uncrowdy lodges and natural reserves, total security, etc). I Travelled with my wife in August 2005 for two weeks. We rented a 4x4 in Windhoek and we selfdrived for 3.500 km. If you like driving you will really enjoy the gravel roads but you have to be always focus on your driving because of the animals crossing and the danger of getting out of the road due to the gravel. The gasoline is quite cheap (0,5 €/Lit aprox) Our itinerary was as it follows:

Day 1: WINDHOEK. Olive Grove Hotel (very recommendable and small hotel). Windhoek does not have any interest but I find recommendable to overnight at the capital city just to rest after the flight and before starting to drive.

Day 2 & 3: OTJIWARONGO. Okonjima Game Reserve (very nice, and small lodge with great service and nice staff. They offer chee-tah viewing). The game viewing is just OK but this is a good start for your trip and a way to make a stop in the long drive from Windhoek to Etosha. We stayed here for 2 nights but now I would recommend just 1 night.

Day 4 & 5: ETOSHA. Eagle Tented Camp (beautiful tented camp located 50 Km from Etosha Park; very recommendable and much cheaper than Ongava). The Camp offers to visit its own private Reserve and/or guided visits to Etosha but even the Camp Staff recommended us to visit Etosha by ourselves. Etosha does not offer as a beauty scenary as the sabanas in Serengeti or Massai Mara but even though is a beautiful place to visit and you will see a lot of game (lions, giraffe, elephants, zebras, ostrich, springbok, gnu). Self driving is allowed and this is a great plus compared to other Reserves in Africa. This is what we did and, believe or not, we drove for 700 km in 2 days and eventhough we did not have time enough to reach the eastern part of Etosha (as i said before i love driving...)

Day 6 & 7. DAMARALAND. Mowani Lodge (our favourite lodge ... it is located in an amazing spot 15 min driving from Twyfelfontein ; it looks like you were staying at Mars or in a Star Wars Village, the view tents have spectacular views (specially Tent number 4 in which we were lucky to stay) and the staff (specially the chef) is wonderful. The sunsets are spectacular. I have been travelling a lot during the last 7 years and i can tell you that this is one the most beautiful lodges i have ever been. Do not miss this lodge???

Day 8: SWAKOPMUND. Swakopmund Hotel. (the hotel is Ok, nothing special as most of the big vacation hotels you would find anywhere but there are not many options on this area). The only reason for staying at Swakopmund was to make a stop in the long way from Damaraland to Sossusvlei and to take one of the Boat Tours that departs from Walbis Bay which is located 50 km from Swakopmund. We did not expect too much from the Boat Tour as we thought that it was going to be something very touristic and unspecial but we decided to take it as we did not have to much to do. I can tell you that the tour (with a company called Levo Tours) was a big surprise for us, maybe because we did not have too many expectations,...it was a beautiful tour in which we saw many seals, pelicans and two big wales. Anyway, eventhough your travel agency insists in staying at Swakopmund for 2 days (most of them do insist on it and i still do not understand why) i would recommend you just to stay 1 night: There is nothing to do and see at Swakopmund except the boat tour wich departs from Walbis.

Day 9. SOSSUSVLEI. Kulala Lodge (nice location and tents but the service was not ok according to its price). Sossusvlei and its dunes are undescriptible. The scenary is amazing, one of the most beautiful places i have ever visited in the world. If you like photography spend a time in Deadlei; when i arrive there i became crazy shooting and shooting my camera, i was not able to stop. The contrast of colors early in the morning was something spectacular (strong yellows, oranges and blues.....). The travel guides often say that this is one of the most photogenic spots all over world..... It is 100% true. The best way to visit Sossusvlei is selfdriving as we did. We spent the whole morning (from 07 AM to 14:00 PM) driving and mainly walking around.

Day 10 & 11: NAMIB RAND. Wolwedans Dune Lodge (very nice lodge with good services and stunning location) My first impression when i arrive to the reception desk was not that good because i found the staff a little bit rude (my wife did not have the same opinion and now i must say that she was right. Do not ask me why but that was my first impression eventhought later on i had to change my opinion) and we were not allowed to selfdrive along the Reserve. After staying here for two days I must say that I really enjoyed the staff and the guided tours along the reserve. The landscapes here are less "radical" as in Sossusvlei but i am not able to tell you which scenary I liked the most. This place is really worthed a two days stay.

Day 12. WINDHOEK. Villaverdi Hotel (this is a small hotel. It is OK but I liked Olive Grove much more).

Final Comments: Beautiful trip, if you have the oportunity do not doubt, go to Namibia before it becomes a popular destination as Kenya or Tanzania. Many people make the same itinerary but in the opposite direction:Windhoek-Sossusvlei-Swakopmund-Damaraland- Etosha- Otjiwarongo-Windhoek. In my opinion it is more recommendable to make the itinerary finishing in Sossusvlei as we did. In this way your trip will be more "in crescendo".

I recommend you a small travel agency called OIPUKA which is managed by a nice and very good professional girl from Spain (Ana Cuesta) that is located in Walbis Bay. She offers high standard trips in Namibia at a better price than all the travel agencies at our homecountries. Her homepage is www.oipuka.com
